Ichneumon Wasp - Megarhyssa nortoni

Ichneumon Wasp - Megarhyssa nortoni
Coos Bay, Coos County, Oregon, USA
October 19, 2008
Size: Body 1"
This beautiful wasp was seen mid-afternoon very, very sluggish. Body was 1" overall approx. 3". I would suspect Ichneumon and female.

Yes.
This is probably a (female) specimen of Megarhyssa nortoni, which I think is the only species in the genus found in Oregon. Nice find!

Ichneumon
Thanks Eric - I am still amazed at the beauty of this family of Wasps.

You're welcome.
Yes, me too, amazed at the diversity. When I was collecting in Cincinnati, almost every ichneumon I found was different from the last....and I'm not exaggerating by much. Broadleaf forests seem to have an infinite variety of ichneumons and syrphid flies:-)
