Wow, thanks for your input on this. I was glad just to have help with family-level ID. I went back to the original file from the camera and updated this image. It is now much larger (2400X1600 vs. original 1024 width) when viewed full-size.
I also added another from the series as a linked image. The angle is slightly different, but not approaching a full dorsal shot. This was the only other image with acceptable focus.

This has me confused
If the anepisternum were bare it would be Suillia quinquepunctata. If the eye had a stripe it would be S. nemorum.

Moved from Dung Flies. Oh, thanks, Keith. Looking at our images here, it looks like the many other images identified as Suillia, so I've gone ahead and moved it there, perhaps foolishly.

i would feel more confident
calling this Heleomyzidae possibly Suillia sp. Scathophaga has more head bristles and a more clear costal break.
