I got at least 6 of these caddisflies, and a couple of them did come out of their cases by themselves.

would be my somewhat educated guess. Keep it for me and I will be able to do better than that.

I agree, Don. I would even go so far as to say it is Phryganea, judging not only by the case and the size but by the big, backwards arrow on its head. In fact, I just picked up and photographed one of these critters myself earlier this month.
Did you pull it out of the case, or did it come out of its own accord? Phryganeids will do that.

Either P. sayi or cinerea. No one at this time can separate the larvae. Based on Tom's specimens.
