rove beetle - Neohypnus lecontei

rove beetle - Neohypnus lecontei
Plum Island, Essex County, Massachusetts, USA
October 21, 2008
Size: 6mm
Found under a log at the beach.

Thanks Adam
I'll send the large file soon.

Confirmed
After viewing the larger image I can see that the head has no microsculpture and a large puncture near the eye lies in a deep depression. Most specimens have a slightly darker body, contrasting with light elytra but there is much variation in this genus and this particular one could even be teneral.

That's great Adam
Thanks for the confirmation of this species, and an explanation of what you looked for.

Neohypnus lecontei
This is Neohypnus lecontei, a species that seems to prefer marine beaches. It is difficult to explain the ID as genus-level characters aren't clear. I eliminated species from several genera based on other characters visible in the photo to arrive at N. lecontei. To be absolutely sure Tom, could you send me a large version of this photo? I just want to make sure that there is no microsculpture on the head (one other, much smaller species is left to eliminate)

Thanks for sharing the photo Tom,

Adam
