Was on Doveweed. By checking this site, I think I may have identified it as Scolia dubia but not sure.

Ya, I love this site, it really shows you that you have to use keys to get things ID correctly, there are some many species of insects that look exactly alike with only a few characteristics that define each one. However in this case, scolia is a small genus and easy to ID, only 25 species of Soliidae in the USA.
