Greater Bee Fly, Bombylius major, sp7 1072 - Bombylius major
MB05 Pond, Monte Bello Open Space Preserve, Santa Clara County, California, USA
April 11, 2008
Size: ~7-10 mm
This species was found working around aquatic vegetation. Golden brown, very fuzzy, wings smoky with dark costal patch. This individual appears to have an ectoparasite attached to its thorax. Another photo, my #1100, is of another individual (same time and place), presumably the same species, but darker and with a dark abdominal stripe. Gender difference?
