Greater Bee Fly, sp7 1100 - Bombylius major
MB05 Pond, Monte Bello Open Space Preserve, Santa Clara County, California, USA
April 11, 2008
Size: ~7-10 mm
This species was found working around aquatic vegetation. Golden brown, very fuzzy, wings smoky with dark costal patch. This individual appears to have an ectoparasite attached to its thorax. Two other photos, my #1071 and 1072, are of another individual (same time and place), presumably the same species, but lighter in color and without the dark abdominal stripe. Gender difference?

BTW, if you don't get IDs on any given post after a few days, move it to Bee Flies, where it's certain to be noticed.
