New Home New Bugs in my Sink - Entomobrya unostrigata
Will County, Illinois, USA
July 8, 2005
Size: 1/16 of inch if that
Anyone know what this is and how to get rid of it?

Moved from Entomobryidae.

Entomobrya unostrigata
Although the picture is fuzzy, the dorsal pattern matches quite well with the species description.

BTW, (I know I'm late with this...) but it will go away by itself after a while. Collembola in the house are just a temporary nuissance. Like flies... Sometimes you may find them at moist places such as bathrooms or kitchens. Or in unheated (cellars, garages) or unused rooms. Or empty houses. Cleaning and ventilating (reducing the moist level) will be sufficient to get rid of them.

Entomobryidae
Hi Geek. Many springtails invade our houses once and a while. They are harmless. They will disappear as soon as you have settled in your new house. They need a high degree of moist in the air to survive. Ventilating the room regularly will be sufficient to keep them away.

Springtail
This is a springtail, a member of the order Collembola. You don't really need to get rid of them, they're harmless. They gravitate toward moist areas, if you let it dry out thoroughly they'll leave. A few websites with more information:

Springtails.
Actually, I have a handful in my shower. I wish they'd do a better job cleaning the mildew, though:-) Ha! Yes, I'm not a lousy housekeeper, I'm promoting biodiversity!
