Southeastern Blueberry Bee - Habropoda laboriosa

Southeastern Blueberry Bee - Habropoda laboriosa
Clarke County, Mississippi, USA
March 4, 2008
These bees were observed and photographed feeding upon Henbit and Judas Tree flowers in spring of 2008 in Mississippi. I would like to thank members of Bugguide.net for identifying them as the Southeastern Blueberry Bee, Habropoda laboriosa. See more photos at http://www.byteland.org/msinsects/bee_and_flowers_id.html I am still curious to know what flower may be giving these bees the scarlet red coloring on its head and proboscis?

Done
I found this little tidbit about this bee:
A good pollinator of blueberries. It is estimated that each female visits nearly 50,000 Vaccinium ashei flowers in its lifetime, producing over 6,000 ripe blueberries with a fresh market value of $20 U.S.

Habropoda laboriosa
note wing venation

The color on the head seems to match the
..color of the pollen on these blossoms. I wonder if it could be pollen stuck on the head??? I know this sometimes occurs with birds. I'm NOT an expert, so this very well may be red coloration on the bee itself.

Right on.
Your analysis is correct, Nancy. Happens quite frequently, in fact.
