Size: about 2.7 mm

During the 2008 Odiorne State Park Bioblitz I tried sifting water-logged grass and debris at the edge of a small freshwater pond, finding a number of these quite small hydrophylids that I'm sure are a new species for me due to their extraordinary size. I seem unable at this point to find images I'm certain I took of both underside and adjacent to rule position. I can re-shoot if needed.

There are two on Chandler's checklist: subcup*rus and con*fusus. I noticed Don was wishing for a ventral view on Tom's posting. What is to be learned from underside detail?

mesosternum not laminate = everyone else
9 antennomeres = P. despectus LeConte
8 antennomeres = see below
Pronotal punctation reduced more than elytra, widely scattered = P. confusus Wooldridge
or punctation not reduced,
Pronotum metallic = P. subcupreus (Say)

I'm not picking up the same size punctures on the pronotum as the elytra and the pronotum never looked the least metallic. I rather suspect P. conf*usus. I'll have to see if I have an antenna shot.

Checking, there is no antenna shot. If I can tease an antenna out, I will have to re-re-shoot :-(
