Fritillary caterpillar - Agraulis incarnata

Fritillary caterpillar - Agraulis incarnata
Durham, Durham County, North Carolina, USA
We planted Purple Passion-flower (Passiflora incarnata) in our front yard the year we moved in, 2002. I can't remember if it was that summer or the next that this caterpillar appears. Looks like a Gulf Fritillary (Agraulis vanillae) to me, but this is a vagrant in Durham, doesn't breed in the area. Have not seen them again since. We live about 2 miles from a butterfly house, maybe an escapee oviposited in our yard?

Really?
I see them on passion flowers around here (Atlanta) every year. I don't think it would be a stretch for them to be up there. Of course, just because they're breeding and munching away, that doesn't mean they survive the winter :).
