Unknown Denver Spider - Araneus gemmoides

Unknown Denver Spider - Araneus gemmoides
Denver, Denver County, Colorado, USA
June 28, 2005
Size: approx. 3/4 inch
I am not a spider expert, but have looked on almost every available website to try to identify this spider and cannot. I believe it to be in the orb weaver family, but that is just a guess. Please respond if you know of this spider.

Cat-faced Spider
This is the Cat-faced Spider, Araneus gemmoides.

Araneus sp.
Your identification to family is correct, this is an orb weaver. It is probably in the genus Araneus, as several species have those "shoulder" humps visible in your image. Individuals within a species are extremely variable in color, so without dissecting the specimen it is virtually impossible to give a more specific ID.
