Red-disked Alpine- Erebia discoidalis - Erebia discoidalis

Red-disked Alpine- Erebia discoidalis - Erebia discoidalis
near University of Calgary, Calgary, Alberta, Canada
May 15, 2008
Size: ~43 mm wingspan
New species to the guide. Collected from an open disturbed field. This widespread northern species can be separated from other alpines by the absence of spots on the wings and the large reddish blotches ("disks") on the forewings. Apparently reported to having only 1 brood per season and are on the wing during the spring (May-June depending on locality).
