Machaerocera mexicana - female

Machaerocera mexicana - Female
nr. Pantano, Pima County, Arizona, USA
October 25, 2008
Size: 48 mm
I went to see these in Arizona, and was a lot of fun finding them. I spending much of a day watching them.

I couldn't resist throwing a few more photos of this beautiful species in here. I posted a male, and some different views. They show a bit of color variation between individuals. This was the darkest female I saw.

These Arizona specimens seem to be larger than most Mexican material. Large size was part of the supposed distinction of for the name Machaerocera magna from somewhere in Durango (the closest documented Mexican location for this species to Arizona that I'm aware of). So, perhaps these are the same as those that were named M. magna. Even if they are, there is very little difference otherwise from other Mexican material, and M. magna has been listed as a synonym of M. mexicana.

Where is nr Pantano?
could you give me an idea? Pantano Wash?

Pantano, Arizona
Hi, Easiest is to go to this page (same species, same day), rather than me duplicating what I put there. Others have asked. I'm surprized how Pantano suddenly (well, at least in the last several years) seems to have dropped off the face of the Earth.
