Mallophora orcina - male

Mallophora orcina - Male
Near I-85 and Cole Mill Rd., Durham County, North Carolina, USA
July 7, 2005
Size: ~20 mm
Lateral view. This impressive robber fly was quite flighty while it had some prey--we kept scaring it up. After it finished its meal, it calmed down and we were able to approach it closely. Same individual photographed by Josh Rose:

Image updated 11/6/21.
Update--looking at other images here identified as to sex, it does appear to be a male:

Abdomen is comparatively short, and I think I see claspers on the lateral view.

Really fine shot there Patrick. One of the nicest robbers in the south.
