Fungus stricken Syrphids - Eupeodes volucris

Fungus stricken Syrphids - Eupeodes volucris
In open desert scrub, NW of I-15 and Main St, Hesperia, San Bernadino County, California, USA
May 3, 2008
I'm wondering if those may be fungal hyphae near the tip of the abdomen of the fly at the upper right of the image. From the markings, and the somewhat bulbous projection at the tip of the abdomen, I think that may be a male Eupeodes.
