Fungus stricken Syrphids - Eupeodes volucris - male

Fungus stricken Syrphids - Eupeodes volucris - Male
NW of I-15 and Main St, Hesperia, San Bernadino County, California, USA
May 3, 2008
The "bloating" caused by the fungal growth apparently caused the abdominal terga to expand and rupture. (Poor syrphid!)

See first image in series for details of the mass fungal occurrence.
