What a fine
Looking robber with the tricolored wing. Appears to be a Proctacanthus species. There is one species found only in CA. Possibly Dr. Fisher could confirm the species. Nice insect.

Thanks, Herschel!
After perusing your website I thought about Proctacanthus as a possibility, but still don't really know this family. Also, without specimen (had my cameras but no net) I felt I couldn't get beyond broad guesses.

My comment
Made it sound like there were only one species. There are three. P. nearno, occidentalis and coquilletti. The last is found only in CA and Baja. It is described as having a dark patch in the midwing.

Yes, this is Proctacanthus co
Yes, this is Proctacanthus coquillettii (male) -- restricted to sand dunes in Calif. and Baja Calif. (N & S).

Thanks, Eric, for the ID!
This was an interesting encounter in the dunes.
Thanks, Herschel, for the quick move.
