Habitat?
Habitat could be a big clue. Meanwhile, check out Prionus emarginatus as a possibility? Did it have a hairy "neck" like that?

Thanks for the help so far! Habitat was a relatively small wooded area in the middle of the Chihuahuan Desert, dominated by honey mesquite trees. I added a dorsal shot I found that seems not to show a hairy neck (right?).
