orange-spotted monotomid - Rhizophagus sayi

orange-spotted monotomid - Rhizophagus sayi
Amherst, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
November 14, 2008
Size: about 2.8 mm
I found a couple of these little slow-moving monotomid beetles under a loose patch of bark on a fairly fresh oak log. The position of the orange areas on the elytra make me think this is R. sayi. This one was missing an antenna but I made a vertical flipped copy of the image in PhotoShop, rotated, and lassoed and moved the good antenna from the copy over to the original, flattened the image, and clone-stamped to make the background blend in.

Nice find Jim!
And good job on the photoshop. If you didn't say anything, I'd never notice it wasn't natural.

It helps
that I have 360-degree lighting so the shadows don't betray my handiwork :-)
