teneral Bitoma? - Bitoma crenata

teneral Bitoma? - Bitoma crenata
Amherst, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
November 14, 2008
Size: about 3 mm
Found under a patch of loose bark on a fairly fresh oak log. Because of its color I at first I thought this was a common tan-colored laemo*phloeid yet I didn't see the characteristic long antennae. Under magnification it was quite apparently in a different family altogether, recently assigned to Zopheridae. I suspect that this beetle is merely a recently eclosed member of a common red and black Bitoma species and I aim to observe it in captivity for a while to see if I'm right.

Moved from Bitoma.

I recently...
found a very similar beetle and got a few images of it. I picked up a piece of loose bark from a recntly fallen (storm damage) maple tree.

Here's another possibility for yours:

Of course the texture is rather different. The one shown is also teneral and would turn to a darker brown in a few days. Mine above I expect to develop red and black markings, which appear to me to be faintly visible here.
