Beetle ID? - Meloe americanus - male

Beetle ID? - Meloe americanus - Male
Hiram, Wayne County, Missouri, USA
November 14, 2008

from John Pinto:
"Meloe impressus or americanus (more likely the latter based on pronotum -- but can't be sure)"

Kevin--
That's the best anybody on this planet can do: Dr Pinto is the author of a third of currently known Nearctic Meloe species. Next time pls try to get a good closeup of the pronotum and male antennae for more confident ID. Keep taking and posting pictures! Cheers, =v=

male Meloe
weird antennae give off gender

Is it impossible to ID down to species from photos?
Or at least my photos?

your photo is fine for species ID, i believe
unfortunately, I’m not that familiar with Nearctic fauna (European species are much easier to me), and for some reason most Meloe pix in the BugGuide sit unidentified, although they are not that tough at all. I hope somebody (maybe I) eventually gets to them and sort them out, but to me it’s not a priority
