Acronicta impleta
Just outside of Comer, Oglethorpe County, Georgia, USA
October 13, 2008
Size: about 3 cm
I could have sworn I saw an almost identical caterpillar image on here recently (not yet identified,) but I can't find it again.

You're right!
So it's not a tussock moth after all, but even Wagner notes the similarity in his book. Thanks for helping. This one would have driven me crazy.
