Pentatomidae: Holcostethus abbreviatus - Holcostethus abbreviatus

Pentatomidae: Holcostethus abbreviatus - Holcostethus abbreviatus
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, San Diego County, California, USA
March 27, 2004
Size: BL about 8 mm
We found this stink bug of Turnip Mustard in Borrego Palm Canyon. It really looks like an Euschistus, but this bug's shoulders are more rounded than any I've seen and the scutellum is broader and more white-tipped.

The key to species asks color of underside. Image #244549 shows the underside as yellow, which would key out to H. abbreviatus. We checked at the CU Museum entomology collection, and H. abbreviatus seems correct.

i trust your ID and suspected H. abbreviatus, too. glad it's settled
Moved from Holcostethus.

Holcostethus abbreviatus
Again thanks so much, v belov, in identifying this pentatomid to genus and so giving us the roadmap that was necessary in discovering the species.

must be Holcostethus

Holcostethus
It's great to have this stink bug identified! We've been puzzling over images of Euschistus and they were so close but just not quite right. Thank you so much, v belov. You are providing such a valuable service and it is much appreciated.

you are most welcome
it is thanks to BG contributors like you who post their interesting pix that i've learned so much about the Nearctic fauna and now am able to ID American insects with increasing confidence
