Lupine Bug - Megalotomus quinquespinosus

Lupine Bug - Megalotomus quinquespinosus
Loess Hills State Forest, Pisgah, Harrison County, Iowa, USA
September 18, 2008
Size: ~15mm
Prairie ridge in Loess Hills State Forest in western Iowa. I found it on my clothes after walking a short distance from gravel road into a dry native prairie with a brushy border of dogwood and sumac.

Alydus pilosulus, i believe

Thank you, that was quick! I read the descriptions for this species and for the genus Alydus and saw that the latter says "Antennae all dark, differentiates from similar Megalotomus". Four of the six photos in the Alydus pilosos gallery showed dark antennae, but two showed a white band; but these were annotated as Megalotomus quinquespinosus. I then looked up Megalotomus quinquespinosus and saw the white band on all six photos (antennae were not visible on a seventh photo). The specimen in my photo has the white bands - any possibility that it might be Megalotomus quinquespinosus? (I am new at this and know "just enough to be dangerous" so am just wondering based on picture-matching, which I know is not a strong method.) Thanks again!

you're absolutely right -- Megalotomus quinquespinosus

You did not mislead me, you set me on the right track. In fact, I see now that the annotations of the A.p. gallery photos as M.q. were by you. Thanks so much!
