Empidid Fly - Dolichocephala argus

Empidid Fly - Dolichocephala argus
Lacey (near Olympia), Thurston County, Washington, USA
November 22, 2008
Seemed to have black wings with white spots. The white spots turned iridescent under the flash, but you can still somewhat see what they look like to the naked eye on the left side of the fly in this picture.

Moved
Moved from Dolichocephala.

Empididae
Probably genus Dolichocephala, which would be new to Bugguide. Micropezidae look superfically similar but have very different antennae and a different wing venation. Here is an image of the European species Dolichocephala irrorata. Excellent find!

Confirmed
I am confirming the genus. It is also a new subfamily for Bugguide. Good work!

Micropezidae
One of the stilt-legged flies...can't provide a species id though...

thanks, Tim
Just had a look through that section of the site: looks like a good match. As to species (or even genus), we only have three identified on the site. I'm glad to at least get this to family though. And it's a new family for me. :) Thanks again.
