That 'bulge' is the famous collophore of Collembola. The unique organ the name Collembola is derived from. Collophore means 'glue-bearer'.
Collembola means 'glue-stick'.
In the early days of Collembology researchers assumed that that organ was a kind of stick that produced glue with which the specimens could be anchored against a smooth surface (e.g. glass).
