Freshly emerged buckmoths - Hemileuca maia - male

Freshly emerged buckmoths - Hemileuca maia - Male
Uptown New Orleans, Orleans Parish, Louisiana, USA
December 3, 2008
Size: ~35mm
These just started emerging in my back yard today, and there are about a dozen that I spied in the sunny spot on the side of my house. All the ones I found are male, which is probably a case of protandry. That's when males emerge early to gain a competitive mating advantage (because they get instant access to emerging females).

very nice
Great pictures Mark. I would love to see one of these outbreaks some day. The only insect outbreak I've experienced was a huge brood of periodical cicadas, that was trully amazing.
