Pond Skater-Limnoporus - Limnoporus notabilis - male

Pond Skater-Limnoporus - Limnoporus notabilis - Male
U of Calgary, Calgary, Alberta, Canada
July 6, 2008
Size: 17 mm
Collected from a stormwater pond located near campus grounds. This is Limnoporus based on a key of aquatic Hemiptera from Aquatic Invertebrates of Alberta. Key characters of this genus include (1) 1st antennal segment is shorter than the 2nd and 3rd antennal segments combined (shown clearly in the head closeup), (2) reddish brown colouration dorsally, and (3) slender appearance and large size.
2 species are present in Alberta: L. notabilis and L. dissortis. L. notabilis is larger (14.4-19.7 mm) and the males lack posteromedial notches on the last abdominal sternite (apex). See reference: Gerridae of Oregon and Washington. This specimen is most likely L. notabilis due to its large size (17 mm). L. dissortis is smaller (12-15 mm) and more widespread east of the Rockies. In Alberta, L. notabilis is limited to the Southwestern mountains and nearby foothills but is more common in the far west (BC and west US).
