Siphunculina? - Siphunculina - female

Siphunculina? - Siphunculina - Female
Tommy Thompson Park, Toronto, Ontario, Canada
September 10, 2013
Size: 1.8mm
From a sweep sample. Quite the strange specimen. McAlpine key only recognizes one species found in Florida and neotropical regions. Wing venation is a pretty good match for the genus, and other features fit well too.

Photographed at the ROM.

Do you use diptera.info? If so, can you post this picture there? If not, can I cross-post it there? Some Chloropidae experts are found there.

Confirmed
Michael von Tschirnhaus, one of the top experts on the family, confirmed Siphunculina and commented "for an identification much literature must be studied".

He has a database and literature references at https://sdei.senckenberg.de/tschirnhaus-chloropidae/ and https://sdei.senckenberg.de/tschirnhaus-bibliography/.

Siphunculina
I think you're right about Siphunculina. But which? It is not the Florida species, which looks different and is probably restricted to the tropics. I tried keys to Asian species and found S. nidicola Nartshuk, 1971, which is not quite right but is compared to S. stackelbergi Duda, 1933. I have not read the description of that species yet.

Siphunculina
I asked George Foster to look at this and he agrees with Siphunculina. He's seen one from the northern USA so he wasn't surprised to see one from Canada. He didn't speculate as to whether it could be undescribed or Holarctic/introduced.

Thanks Brad! I did send him an email a few days ago about another species and maybe I'll follow up about this one too.
