Hangingfly - Bittacus strigosus

Hangingfly - Bittacus strigosus
near Ailsa Craig, Middlesex, Ontario, Canada
July 14, 2005
Yesterday must have been "coming out" day for these guys/gals, as I flushed hundreds from the ground cover of a riverside woodlot. They were hanging out (of course) among Zigzag Goldenrod, Enchanter's Nightshade, Running Strawberry-Bush, and seedlings of ash and maple, and would fly less than a metre when disturbed. In the few places where the sun broke through the canopy, I could see their wings flashing among the hordes of mosquitoes - it was almost beautiful.

Moved from Bittacus.

Bittacus strigosus. Sex uncertain, but probably a male.

Nice capture
Those spurs nail the id.
