It has to be Blepharida since
It has to be Blepharida since it has frass piled 7p on its back and is feeding on sumac. I am not sure if B. rhois is present in New Mexico but that is the species here along the Front Range in Colorado. Adults should be present a few weeks after the larvae are seen.

Do you have any other shots of this that you could add? It reminds me of a chrysomelid larva that has piled some excrement on its back...
