Moth - Melanolophia signataria - male

Moth - Melanolophia signataria - Male
Stafford, Stafford County, Virginia, USA
July 10, 2005
Came to porch light. I'm stumped. These speckled moths are all beginning to look alike to me. Can anyone help me with the ID?

6621 - Signate Melanolophia Moth - Melanolophia signataria.....
.... with a caveat: If you keep seeing specimens identical to this through the summer and autumn, then it is M. canadaria. The season for M. signataria ends, in Maryland, about July 10th. M. Canadaria should be the only Melanolophia flying after that. If you want to be absolutely certain, call it Melanolophia sp.

I almost got it!
I checked my notes and had 6621 with a question mark. I just saw some last night and assumed they were the same. Thanks for the tip and the ID.
