Rusty Tussock Moth Caterpillar - Orgyia antiqua

Rusty Tussock Moth Caterpillar - Orgyia antiqua
Indian Gap, Great Smoky Mtns NP, Sevier County, Tennessee, USA
August 9, 2008
I'm trying to fill in some gaps that I didn't see others had submitted from gathering_2008.

Sorry, I don't recall the foodplant for this one. There were dozens if not hundreds of these near the road. Identification is mine based on Wagner (1). Specifically, the lateral pencils separate this one from the other Orgyia species.

Wagner puts the range for this one in the North (down to northern Connecticut, central New York, northern Missouri) so this might be a range extension.
