Might be 10651 - Agrotis venerabilis
... or any of several other members in that genus. Sometimes photos of them make them appear to be covered with a dark chocolate or black gloss. I tried to lighten this photo to see if I could discover hidden markings, but I was unsuccessful in the attempt.
