Sphecid/Crabonid Wasp - Aphilanthops frigidus - female

Sphecid/Crabonid Wasp - Aphilanthops frigidus - Female
Bow River, Calgary, Alberta, Canada
July 20, 2008
Size: 1.3 cm
Keyed this to Sphecidae using my old key (How to know the Insects by Roger G. Bland) but most likely Crabonidae. I suspect something from Bicyrtes or Hoplisoides but not sure...

Aphilanthops frigidus, female (AB)
A. subfrigidus has the flagellum all-black.

Aphilanthops
A. subfrigidus or frigidus

Thanks!
That's something definitely more interesting and uncommon than an ordinary wasp!
May be a silly question...do these go for the winged reproductives or do they actually invade the nest to get to the queen?

No silly questions.
They do go for the winged reproductives.

Crabronidae: Philanthinae.
I suspect this might be a species of Aphilanthops, but do wait for comments from Matthias Buck or John Ascher. Neat find at any rate!
