I have seen these amazingly well-disguised bugs creeping slowly along the moss- and lichen-covered sides of oak trees. The bug is in the lower left of this image, while a spot of actual lichen is in the upper right. When I try to flip the critters over, they curl up and play dead for quite a while. I have caught a glimpse of a small pair of mandibles sticking out the front, and legs underneath (haven't been able to count them). My guess right now is some type of beetle larva. Can anyone help identify this?
