Robber Fly - Proctacanthus occidentalis

Robber Fly - Proctacanthus occidentalis

This Robber Fly was preoccupied, as you can see, with a bee it had captured and was in the process of devouring. So I was able to crawl up to it on my belly and take dozens of photos.

While I was able to determine that it is in the order Asilidae, I found that there are many species of differing characteristics and size. The scientific name for this species would be greatly appreciated.

I especially like this close-up since it shows such details as wing hinges and the familiar "beard." This is one hairy bug!

Nice images!
Minor point in taxonomy - the order is Diptera and the family is Asilidae... We have several experts on this site that will probably be able to ID this fly to the genus level, anyway...
