Robber Fly - Proctacanthus occidentalis Bessie Butte Summit Trail, Deschutes National Forest, 8 miles southeast of Bend, Deschutes County, Oregon, USA August 23, 2008 Size: 2"
This Robber Fly was preoccupied, as you can see, with a bee it had captured and was in the process of devouring. So I was able to crawl up to it on my belly and take dozens of photos.
While I was able to determine that it is in the order Asilidae, I found that there are many species of differing characteristics and size. The scientific name for this species would be greatly appreciated.
I especially like this close-up since it shows such details as wing hinges and the familiar "beard." This is one hairy bug!
