Unknown wasp, ant or ? - Brachycistis
Bonny Lake State Park, Yuma County, Colorado, USA
August 26, 2008
Size: 2/3 inch
Is this a wasp or a flying ant or a ? This was at a lush cottonwood area in the otherwise barren part of Eastern CO. The head looks like a wasp to me but I don't know this group too well.

Brachycistis sp.
Moved from Brachycistidinae.

Flying wasp
This is a nocturnal wasp in the family Tiphiidae, subfamily Brachycistidinae, genus ???????. These guys are pretty hard to identify past the subfamily level :)
