What is it? - Hymenaphorura cocklei
Stevenson, Columbia river gorge., Washington, USA
December 28, 2008
Size: about 1/16 of an inch
It has been 22 degrees at my place for about a week with lots of snow. A few days ago it warmed up a bit and started to rain. I looked outside today and noticed these tiny yellow grub-like things floating and dancing in a very cold ice puddle. They are probably common but I was just curious as to what they were. Thanks :)

Indeed, I agree with John, the yellow ones are Onychiuridae.
The dark one is Hypogastruridae. Possibly Ceratophysella.

Patricia, I would appreciate receiving your permission to use your Collembola picture(s) as illustrations at collembola.org
Credits and copyrights will be provided for each picture used.
Thanks in advance.

BTW, are you sure about the date? 1969?

pictures.
Sure you can use my pictures and I am not sure why the date is so off. I took the pictures December28 2008.

Thanks
for your kind permission. Best wishes for 2009!

date
I corrected the date for you.

Date.
Thank you for correcting that John.

ID
I have been seeing thousands of them also. A few years back I was told that this was Onychiurus cocklei, but don't know if that is still correct.

Stevenson?
Wow.... you live in Stevenson too? COOL!

Springtails
Thanks for the reply :) I am pretty sure they are Hypogastruridae or springtails.

springtails
(possibly, Hypogastruridae)

Springtails
I think you are right. In all the pictures I looked at of springtails i just never saw any that were so yellow. Thanks for your reply.
