Water louse - Caecidotea

Water louse - Caecidotea
Churchville, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA
December 28, 2008
Found in a pond in Churchville Nature Center - there were *lots* of these guys in there, and they seemed to be peacefully cohabiting with several small species of snails a couple different sorts of tadpole.

Moved
Moved from Asellus.

beautiful photo, but not likely Asellus
Hi.
I'm looking at a key to freshwater isopods for the Mid-Atlantic region. In this region, the only freshwater genera listed in the family Asellidae are Caecidotea and Lirceus. My best guess is that this is a Caecidotea species.

Nice photo!
What struck me was how similar these look similar to land dwelling "roly pollies", or Sal Bugs, or whatever they are called! You know...those bugs that you see everywhere that roll up into balls and have armadillo like armor!
