Skipper - Hylephila phyleus

Skipper - Hylephila phyleus
Austin, Travis County, Texas, USA
December 30, 2008
Size: 1"

I'm pretty sure this is a female Fiery Skipper,
Hylephila phyleus. Fiery Skipper is found year-round in Texas, I believe.

The way it holds its wings half-open makes it one of the grass skippers for sure. Markings that are consistent with the female fiery are: greenish-brown body, precise pattern of brown and yellow on the wings, leading edge of the upper wing mostly yellow, and light-colored "fringe" along trailing edges of upper and lower wings.

Compare with this photo and another photo from the guide.

Arrowlike Orange Spots
Yes, you may be right. We have many Fiery Skippers in our area but I had never seen one with the very pronounced arrowlike spots on the hind wing. A fresh butterfly so late in year maybe it is a seasonal variant?

Dredging through the files I found this similar (but not matching) spot configuration with the arrowlike explanation:

Thanks for your help, June.

Good luck on this one.
It's often hard to get IDs on skippers.
