Monarch - Danaus plexippus - male

Monarch - Danaus plexippus - Male
Kenner, Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, USA
December 30, 2008

Are Monarchs there year 'round?
And/or do they overwinter there? (I see only two Louisiana posts, both towards end of year.)

To be honest...
this is the first time I have seen one and been sure that it was a monarch. I have seen many in flight but was never sure if they were monarchs, viceroys or anything else. I have several images of viceroys. I usually try to avoid the butterfly images for BugGuide because they are plentyful here. I had just gotten back to my vehicle and picking the sticks, leaves and thorns off of me and looked to see this guy sitting about 20 feet away. He allowed me to get fairly close before flying off.
