perfectly designed reference
despite recent progress in photography that makes the color plates look vintage, the more i use the guide, the more i admire Doug's work. The concept/layout is meticulously thought over, and the product strikes what seems to be a perfect balance between detail and brevity.
I find the way the range and host info is digested and presented exemplary, and the approach whereby the diagnostic hints are provided in the captions extremely helpful.
It is the mindful selection of info and which bits belong where that makes this guide such an exemplary job. You get all you need for efficient [field] identification, and nothing you don't. I wish BG info pages would follow this principle and get rid of loads of irrelevant stuff, like 'diagnoses' copied from keys, redundant taxonomic details (original descriptions, type locality, unwieldy lists of synonyms no one have used for generations...), etymological excursions, life cycle details, etc. Any data easily obtainable elsewhere should be kept out.

New copies available for $15 from INHS...
This is a must have book for any bycid beetle enthusiast, but there's no need to fork over $30 (or more) for a used copy from one of the on-line book dealers as new copies are still available from the publisher (Illinois Natural History Survey) for only $15!!!
