I found this beetle today that somewhat resembles a wedge-shaped beetle. Can anyone confirm that for me? Thanks.

my bad- Macrosiagon sayi
In retrospect, this is not an odd color variant of M. pectinata but a spot-on example of M. sayi (LeConte 1858).

Sorry!

Yes, Macrosiagon
Yes, a Wedge-shaped beetle of the genus Macrosiagon, I believe.

Neat photos, especially of the antennae.

macrosiagon pectinata
Patrick-

You're right, it is a male Macrosiagon, M. pectinata (Fabricius 1775) I believe. The red pronotum is unusual, but not unheard of for this species- it's usually black. Compare the coloration of this critter to the first one posted to the guide. This extreme variation in coloration (and, often, size), has confused taxonomists for centuries, and is common throughout the genus.

cheers,

zack
