Mummified caterpillar?
I think this may be a victim of a mummy-wasp (
Aleiodes
). You might try browsing through
this PDF
and see if any of the mummies look similar. The host plant may be useful in identifying the caterpillar--I believe it's a dogwood.

Thanks for the link. This does look similar to some of the mummified caterpillars shown in the PDF. After looking through the PDF I think I also have some other photos of a mummified tent caterpillar. I'll post a few photos soon.
