Bettle or Tick? - Cimex lectularius

Bettle or Tick? - Cimex lectularius
Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, USA
January 1, 2009
Size: "1/4"
This bug was found in my son's crib. He woke from his nap with 3 bites on three of his fingers. The bites were red, raised and itched like a mosquito bite but this being a cold January day, I did not think that very possible. A few hours after his nap is when I found the bug amongst his blankets. Initially we thought it was a tick because of its size, coloring and it is extremely flat. But we noticed it has antenna and only 6 legs. Could this have been the bug that bit my son? We did have a warm day (30 degrees) a few days ago and we played at the park. His coats hang near his crib so it is possible it was on the coat and crawled onto the crib. Can you identify it? Should I do something further? Thanks! This website is amazing!

On the head
Your picture is exactly what I have. Wow, I had no clue those things were so big! Thank you so much for the help. Now that I am totally grossed out and won't be able to sleep, I can use the time to clean more! Happy New Year!
