It was not looking well. Picked it up and moved it outside for some water and photos in the sun, the put it in the garden.

I found one of these at my mo

I found one of these at my mom's church in Omaha, NE yesterday. It was gorgeous! It must not have appreciated being bothered because it released a stench that stayed on my hand for awhile after I touched it.

I agree. They have great coloring. I think many bugs can do the stinky defense liquid.

Calosoma willcoxi looks nearly identical. This ID (C. scrutator) is probably correct, but just wanted to suggest caution in assigning IDs.

black beetle with rosy/purple markings

I found a dead beetle like this one,but can't tell if it is the same beetle.what is its range?.I'm in CT.

I had no idea there were other ones that looked like this. These are awesome looking! This one was about 35 mm. Big and beautiful.
