Please don't call it that.... - Hydrachna
Saskatchewan, Canada
January 4, 2009
This is my giant water bug, Sir Maims-a-lot. I caught him last fall in a canal close to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. I noticed that he appears to have some sort of parasite. Anyone know what these are?

Sorry for the image quality. This is the best I could do with my camera!

These are larvae of a species
These are larvae of a species of the water mite genus Hydrachna (Acari: Acariformes: Prostigmata: Parasitengona: Hydrachnidae). They commonly parasitize aquatic Hemiptera. This genus is unusual in remaining on the host through the quiescent protonymphal stage. The active, predatory deutonymph then emerges through both protonymphal and larval skins.
