Citrine Forktail - Ischnura hastata - male

Citrine Forktail - Ischnura hastata - Male
Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area, Orange County, North Carolina, USA
July 14, 2005
This male was displaying typical forktail behavior--being still until one attempted a photograph, and then moving. It paused on some grass stems for an extended time. It was performing an unusual maneuver--it would periodically wip its abdomen up and then arc it down so that the tip approached the thorax. I suspect this was the transfer of sperm from the abdomen to the accessory sperm-storage organ on the thorax.
